Brunch by the Brunches

June 25, 2019

Limeneans have strong feelings when it comes to their cuisine. Lima’s restaurants are hotly debated internationally as the best in the world, and when you take the city barrio by barrio, each district’s restaurants are hotly defended by the loyal locals. In Peru, the gastronomy is as old as the ruins and traditions hold strong. Incan smoothies are consumed in the morning for their powerful properties, ceviche is the cure for a hangover, etc. etc. So, it is a bit of a surprise just how rapidly the cosmopolitan brunch culture has been adopted and integrated into everyday life.

Of course, the weather on the dry coast of the South Pacific lends itself perfectly to extended meals overlooking the sea, treating oneself to indulgent delicacies and pleasant ocean breezes. The Cliffside communities of Barranco, Miraflores, and San Isidro are interestingly reminiscent of Santa Monica, California with the walkability, boutiques and casually cool atmosphere, all perched on top of dramatic cliffs leading down to beautiful beaches. A contemplative diner might also note the Miami-esque attitude and hip Latin flavor that is omni-present in each building, conversation, and most importantly, menu. The young population harbor a spark of entrepreneurship and innovation that remind a bit of the bohemian yet savvy Bay Area, and result in an ever-improving and always-evolving list of dishes to tantalize and stimulate eaters. Brunch has become an undeniably satisfying fusion between the cosmopolitan, classic cafes you might find in New York City and the exotic twists of Lima’s distinctive and signature restaurant scene.

Isidro Bistro, located in the Hotel Hyatt Centric San Isidro, has embraced the brunch culture in its new restaurant headed by renowned Limenan chef Carlos Testino. One of the longest bars in Lima, an extensive wine collection, and a serene outdoor terrace all complement a wide variety of international dishes accented with Peruvian flair. The terrace of El Restaurant in Hotel B invites visitors to the bohemian Barranco district to settle into a cozy terrace just a block from the sea, enjoying upscale Mediterranean fare and indulging in the creative cocktails offered at the gin bar. La Principal in San Isidro takes brunch to the next level (in fact, that is the only meal they offer on the weekends) with a bright, airy ambiance fun creations to delight the whole family. From veggie bites to Peruvian classics, and hamburgers to handmade ice cream sandwiches, it is hard to miss on their menu.

For the lucky ladies and lads finding themselves in Lima for leisure, add brunch to the list of to-do’s alongside the world-class museums, galleries, surf and day trips. Lima is no longer a 3-meal town. Brunch has arrived, and looks like its here to stay. .
